1/48 F-15C MSIP II "Special Edition" Review

I do commission built models for side income, and recently had an ex crew chief commission me to do an F-15C for him. Since I had never built a C model for commission, I did some research to find info on what kit would be my best option. I initially wanted to go with the Hasegawa kit, since it's considered the finest F-15C in 1:48 scale, however the initial reviews I read stated that the Has kit did not come with featherless engines, which was a big deal to me and the client. Looking around, I found this recent release from Academy and decided to take a shot at it. First and foremost, the kit is really well packaged, and sells itself well. The parts are all individually wrapped, and he plastic is tough and well detailed. I started looking through the build up, and noticed that it's a bit on the complex side, but that all depends on who you ask. I don't consider myself any professional build by any means, but I would not recommend this kit for someone who is relatively new to the hobby, or just wanting to start out.

One of my very first observations is that there's a LOT of extra parts that come in the box with this kit. Academy has a way of putting parts for different variants of an airplane that they release on one sprue, so for this kit, there was tons of weapons and parts for their F-15K kit, none of which I really needed. This is a good thing for those who like to collect extra parts for their spares boxes, but this can also be a nightmare when you're trying to look for a part, and you see three or four of them, and aren't sure which one you really need. In the end, I scrapped some of the weapons, and pilot figures, and threw about half of the sprues away still full intact. Onto the build itself....the cockpit itself is decently detailed, however the Bay 5, aft of the pilots seat is sparse at best. No boxes, or anything of that sort. You can scratch build some boxes to spice it up a bit, but I feel like they could have given a little more effort in that department from the get go. A few fit issues along the fuselage line up points, and some downright nasty gaps to fill and steps to sand along the intake installation and forward fuselage installation. The engine petals also had a pretty tough time wanting to mate together without any steps, which is a big downfall for me, because with that much detail on featherless engines, I don't like to take sandpaper to the areas. So I had to plug and fill as best I could with liquid cement just to try and fill the voids. I had decent success, but I can still notice them when I looked at it. Last, is the cheap engineering that they did on the vertical stableizers. Most kits that have individual tabs usually have a fitting well where the parts should tab into a groove, and seat very nicely, without any trouble. This kit DOES NOT have that. Sure, there's a little tab that fits into a little hole, but it just goes on there so clunky, and it's not even a very decent, tight fit. They just kind of fall in there, which, to me....means they may as well have not put anything on there at all. At least then you'd have a flat clean surface to mate the two together. I wound up using liquid cement, which melts the plastic to get a very tight join between two pieces, and after shipping the finished product off to the customer, what do you know...the right stab showed up very loose. There's nothing for it to seat well with. Burns my ass, but if you're not planning on shipping it, then again....it can be overcame. All in all, it's a good kit, and it can be made to look the part of a decent A/A Eagle, but it will require some patience and some sanding. I have since found out that new release kits of the Has C model DO have featherless burner cans, and if I'd have known that then, then I wouldn't have bought this kit, simply because I like to go with what's tried and true, especially when I'm building the final product for someone else. On a good note the decals in this kit are grade a even though I used aftermarket ones for my build.
