Schleich Crusaders Mailer - 3pc Set Review

I purchased these figures, along with several others of the Schleich line, and was amazed at how well crafted they truly are. The figures are well sculpted, well painted, and very durable - meaning that if I WAS to let my son have a go at them, they could hold up to the punishment.

They are accurately detailed, with no traces of 'fantasy' or 'mythology' to them - no flaming swords, or oddly shaped weapons and armour. The knights are superbly crafted and historically designed.

If I may quote the previous post on similar Schleich figures by EquisNiger: "The pieces come in two opposing camps: the Red Fleur de Lis, and the Blue Lion, and each piece has a corresponding piece in the other, with somewhat different design and graphics. This reflects an impressive variety in styles of armament and armor of the period, and vastly improves the educational value of the series. "

In this case, however, we have the Crusaders... resplendent in their white tunics over well designed and sturdy looking chain-mail wielding: a great war-hammer, a two-headed battle axe and a pole-arm. These are one of a few pieces created for a Crusades line which seems more and more difficult to find ever since we became so politically correct that anything that denotes the war of the 'two great religions' as being inappropriate.

A shame that a historically accurate line of toys must also suffer at the hands of the extreme wings who fail to grasp the significance of such things. Creating a historically accurate toy does not endorse or condemn your views on said subject. Its a toy - and a damn well crafted and durable one at that - let it be just that, and enjoy it for what it is.

In all, I give this line of figure and their accessories Two Thumbs Up!

Turn, Look & Listen Music Box Review

I have for some time suspected that some of the toys I get for my 20-month old, are really mostly for me. This one falls in that category. It's a Montessori-style toy; it produces music by turning a knob and the child can see how the mechanism works. The little red man goes up and down as if he is dancing to the tune.

Well, while I was delighted with the toy and it's incredible education value, my boy did not agree. For about a week he tried to yank out the red man. This because he has other wooden toys with similar wooden peg men that can be removed. Well, the red man in this toy is staying put. Then he lost interest altogether, but every now and then, he brings it to me so I can play the music. In the 3 months that he's had the toy he's played it a total of 10 minutes. I am hoping he will get to appreciate it more when he's older.

I have two little complaints regarding this toy and the company. First, the knob is a little too long, so when you turn it in the lowest position there is no room for the hand to fit between the knob and the flat surface where the toy is placed. So turning the knob requires more dexterity - you have to twist your fingers or bring your hand up or even place the toy at the edge of a table. I suspect this is the reason why my boy always brings it to me to play instead of playing it himself. (I must also say that a three-year old friend of my son was also struggling with the down position of the handle). The second complaint I have is about the somewhat high shipping costs of Tag Toys, which in addition to the CA tax add up quite a bit to their not-so-cheap toys.

UPDATE 9/10/11

The toy broke. There is no way to fix it, and I tried all weekend. For being used very lightly for only about a month, this is unacceptable!
