Product Description

In the Gloom card game, you assume control of the fate of an eccentric family of misfits and misanthropes. The goal of the game is sad, but simple: you want your characters to suffer the greatest tragedies possible before passing on to the well-deserved respite of death. You'll play horrible mishaps like Pursued by Poodles or Mocked by Midgets on your own characters to lower their Self-Worth scores, while trying to cheer your opponents' characters with marriages and other happy occasions that pile on positive points. The player with the lowest total Family Value wins. Printed on transparent plastic cards, Gloom features an innovative design by noted RPG author Keith Baker. Multiple modifier cards can be played on top of the same character card; since the cards are transparent, elements from previously played modifier cards either show through or are obscured by those played above them. You'll immediately and easily know the worth of every character, no matter how many modifiers they have. You've got to see (through) this game to believe it!

Gloom Card Game Bundle: Gloom, Unhappy Homes, Unwelcome Guests and Unfortunate Expeditions Review

I fell in love with the game the first time I played it at my friend's house in early August. The instructions were easy to understand, the cards were beautifully illustrated and despite other people's distaste for this type of plastic playing card, I enjoy knowing that no matter what rough-housing that could occur at the game table, there is literally no amount of liquid on this planet that could damage my precious game.

However, I'm sad to say that while the starter pack is so wonderfully kind, with its pull-out instruction sheet that tells you the names of the story icons and their meaning in the game, or the wonderful blurbs about your families, this is not the same for the expansion packs. So far I have only incorporated Unhappy Homes into my game (I'm slowly teaching everyone I know the game so I can play it with whoever, whenever), and I was greatly upset that the 3 (?) new story icons were not explained, and there wasn't a wonderfully alliterative blurb about the new family that comes with the game. Also, "Mysteries", the new card type that is only playable card for the equally new "Home" cards, are few and far between, which wouldn't bother me so much if they at least had flavor text on them so I could bloody well figure out how to incorporate them into the story telling aspect of game play.

I've yet to add Unwelcome Guests or Unfortunate Expeditions, but I do know that the problem with the lack of blurbs and explanations to accompany new story icons must still be happening as both suffer from the lack of instruction sheet.

That being said, I love this game, it's deliriously fun to play. My critiques are of things that aren't detrimental to game play and are only bothersome to those of us who demand an intricate and obnoxiously thorough understanding of a game's parts.

Suggestions: If new to card-based games, play with people who own at Magic: The Gathering. They understand the instructions quicker. If new to story-telling, play with a bunch of writers and artists. They tell the best stories and you'll get great ideas for your turns from them. MUST BE PLAYED WITH A PONCY BRITISH ACCENT.
