2012 Hot Wheels - Happy Halloween Complete Set (5/5) Review

With Walmart not putting out any of their Fright Cars in individual blister packs, and Target's Halloween five pack simply being non horror themed cars from the main line they couldn't sell or something, it looked like the world would miss out on some cool Halloween themed 1/64 sized vehicles under the Hot Wheels brand in 2012. However Kroger has stepped up to the plate with their five Tricked-Out Treats vehicles sold in individual blister packs. Nice blister packs they are too, a lot better artwork than any of Walmart's Fright Car's over the years. All five cars have the same blister card which to call brilliant would be an understatement. The detail on this bit of cardboard backing is amazing. It's a shame Kroger didn't ask Hot Wheels to put that image on the roof of a car or the side of a van or something, as it would have been much sought after and an instant collectible. On each of the cards set in a gas station, a skeleton is emerging from the building. There's four evil looking pumpkins, spider webs, some creatures with glowing eyes living in a knocked over oil barrel, a full moon with bats flying in front of it and a black hissing back arched cat, plus a heap of other things that make you just look at it and say to yourself, how cool is this!

So what about the vehicles? Well they range from reactions of brilliant to what? That's it! I've reviewed them individually on these links where the vehicles are not being sold in a set. You will also find photographs of each vehicle from other angles as well as be able to see artwork of the above mentioned blister cards better. But I'll sum up each car next to each link if you just want a quick rundown.

Ghostbuster's Ecto-1. This is simply brilliant. The Ecto-1 converted ambulance from the original movie that Hot Wheels released back in 2010 has been repainted black with green slime down the sides, and Slimer on the bonnet. I know online sellers never seem to show this in their photo but click on that Amazon page link and you'll see him there.

Fangula. This version of Fangula has a pile of skulls down the sides, the roof/cockpit area sort of resembles a coffin. It's a nice car.

Hyper Mite. This thing looks like a cross between a Halloween pumpkin and a koala in the style of what a car would look like if built to look like that from bits of other cars put together by a Dr Frankenstein type mad scientist. Pretty cool!

1966 TV Series Batmobile. Yeah not only is it weird that the Batmobile from a TV show nearly 5 decades old is supposed to appeal to kids of today, but you've also got to ask what does Batman have to do with Halloween? They've also done nothing to the Batmobile except paint it with a sparkly glittery purple paint and put some white lines on it. There's no Halloween themed decals on there, no nice artwork, the Bat Symbol hasn't been altered with a vampire or put behind a full moon or anything. If they were going to be this lazy they should have at least painted the thing orange and had black lines on there and tried to pass it off as pumpkin themed or something. I'm guessing someone at Mattel got a call from Kroger when they sent out the promotion images or something and they said ummm, there's supposed to be five not four cars in our contract. Trying to appease the Kroger people the guy who stuffed up at Hot Wheels probably said "What if we chuck in the batmobile?" Looking at the pictures of the Ecto-1 and thinking of all the possibilities of a vampirebatmobile or something Kroger probably said, "All right, but can you get done in time?" Then the hot wheels guy got on the internal phone to the factory in China and told them to rip those variation Batmobiles out of the mass produced line's packets that were set to be loaded onto ships in the first wave to hit stores shortly, then print off some more Tricked Out Treats cardboard backings and put them in there. Otherwise the disaster of this Halloween vehicle just doesn't make any sense at all.

W-Oozie. In the tradition of both Target and Walmart including the Fright Bike in their scary car five packs and Fright Cars individual packs over the years or maybe they are just cashing in on the success of Sons of Anarchy, Hot Wheels have included a motorbike as one of Kroger's five Tricked-Out Treat vehicles. It's a nice bike, but again I don't know really what it has to do with Halloween. It's light blue and has clear wheels so possibly it's supposed to be a ghost vehicle or something. When left in the blister pack it certainly can pass as that.
