Right up front, I have a confession to make: My wife and I are Artifact Puzzles junkies. There's no other explanation for why our puzzle collection contains more than a dozen of these beautiful little wooden jigsaw puzzles. Everytime I see a new one, I get an uncontrollable urge to add it to our collection. So, if you know of a 12-step program for Artifact addicts, let me know. In the mean time....

"Le Passeur" - which my rudementary knowledge of French tells me means "The Smuggler" - is a painting by Patrick Persini - and that's really all I know. Mr Persini is a contemporary artist - he has an active web site - but it tells you very little about him, and what it does tell you is in French. The picture itself is very odd - a seascape that's sort'a floating in the sky while at the same time giving you a sense that you're looking at the floor of some magical ocean. There's no real reference point - objects are just in suspension - it's all very disorienting.... And it's a perfect picture for the puzzle folks at Artifact.

Artifact Puzzles is a tiny company in Seattle. They make exceptional wooden jigsaw puzzles using a sophisticated laser-based cutting technology. The pictures are printed in colorful soy-based inks and bonded to 1/4 inch plywood. The puzzles are small - Le Passeur's 241 pieces make up a puzzle that is only 9 by almost 14 inches. The pieces are very small and very intricate - they have a pleasant feel and heft - and the fit is very tight and precise. These are challenging puzzles for adults and older children. I would not recommend them for children younger than 10, (Artifact warns that the small pieces can be a choking hazard for small children - I will add that they are almost irresistable to dogs who like to chew on a piece of wood now and then - take it from me, a Scottish Terrier will make short work of an Artifact puzzle if you give - in my case - her - a chance).

Like most of the larger Artifact puzzles, "Le Passeur" comes packed in a very cool pine wood box.
