This is the first step in the SCX world of slot cars. SCX Compact is developed especially for children from the age of 4 years (and older). Easy to set up - newly designed track connexion system (insert and click) with borders already included in the curve tracks. Moreover, the full 90 degree curve tracks reduce pieces and therefore set up time. And no pins to hold the track together! The cars are equipped with stronger magnets in order to have more driving fun; i.e., they stay better on the track. The controllers are smaller in order to be better handled by the little children?s hands. Furthermore, they are equipped with a turbo button in order to race even faster on the long straights.

My son received this set as a Christmas present... truth be told, all of the guys in the family got this as a Christmas present! The set went together easily and we were up and racing in no time. After a few minutes we had no trouble keeping the cards on the track -- if they're going too fast (as in a previous review) there's probably something wrong with the controller (or you're accidentally holding down the Turbo button, which makes the car go full speed).

It did seem as though the useful range of the controller trigger was pretty small, though; much of a squeeze at all and you're going too fast. Of course, this layout doesn't offer much of a straightaway, so on a larger layout you'd probably be able to "open it up" and use more of the trigger range - as well as the Turbo button, which is nearly useless on this track -- at least for us.

The track is pretty small, so if you enjoy racing at all you'll probably want to add more track and get a bigger layout. Skilled slot-car drivers may not find it challenging enough, while those with short attention spans could get bored. However, this set is a good way to see if your kids are interested enough in slot car racing to justify the expense of a bigger set. We're watching Amazon for sales on straightaways and other accessories!

The cars seem to be quite rugged. Although we've had plenty of spinouts and high-speed collisions, nothing has broken and they still look like new. They're about the same scale as O-scale model trains, so if you're into doing scenery and such for your layout you could use your old Lionel stuff.

Although SCX claims that this set is suitable for 4 and up, I'm not sure that I'd want a kid younger than 6 playing with it, especially if they're on their own. The track needs to be assembled and disassembled carefully to avoid breaking the connecting pins, and cars should be put back on the track carefully to avoid bending the copper braid contacts. With adult supervision (that is, racing with them!), younger kids should be OK, although it may be hard for them to work the controller gently enough to keep the cars on track.

This set certainly brought back a lot of great memories of slot car racing when I was a kid, and it was fun to share those stories with my son as we were racing.
