X-23 MARVEL Bishoujo X-23 (1/7 scale PVC Figure)MARVEL X-23 BISHOUJO (1/7 PVC 15 cm PVC Figure) Kotobukiya[JAPAN] Review
Okay, before anyone flies off the handle because I didn't give X-23 a five star rating like I've done with EVERY OTHER Kotobukiya Bishoujo statue I've reviewed, I must ask that you read this entire thing and understand why I took that star off. This is X-23, who I know very little about. I know that she's a clone of Wolverine, except way hotter. I know that she was originally a bad guy, what with being made as a clone and considered nothing more than a weapon, but she eventually finds out who and what she really is, and then joins the good guys. She becomes a member of X-Force and goes by the name Laura. How do I know all of this? I read it on the back of the box. Ha ha. Before that, all I knew was that I saw her in the X-Men: Evolution cartoon show, did a little bit of research on her because I thought, "Female Wolverine, YES!" (and couldn't find anything because she was brand new), and then was super excited when she showed up again in Wolverine and the X-men. And then heartbroken when it turned out that show had been cancelled and we wouldn't get to see her anymore.
Anyway, the statue itself is very well done, if a little plain. As you can see, X-23 doesn't wear much in terms of clothes. My guess: she kept shredding them by mistake, so she went with the minimum requirement for a young girl. Note I said 'young girl'. I'm willing to bet that if she was as old as Emma Frost (and as 'equipped'), she'd be wearing something just as revealing. As it is, she has on a black leather sports bra, tight leather pants--which seem to be riding extremely low in the back, so she better not bend over or anything--and some killer combat boots. She's sporting some seriously long gloves as well, which give her a fierce yet sexy look--until you see you see those claws at the end of said gloves and you realize you better watch your step. She also has a choker on with a medallion hanging off of it. I'm sure hardcore X-men fans can tell you want the symbol is, but I can't. There are only two things I think of when I see it: wouldn't that thing be smacking her in the face constantly as she jumped and twirled around, and boy is it in a convenient place.
"Gambit, what are you staring at?"
"Uh...nothing--I mean, your necklace! Yeah, your necklace!"
Her hair is, without a doubt, the most impressive part of this statue. The way it flows back from her head and then breaks apart into separate tendrils is really impressive. Much better than Wonder Woman's hair if you ask me. She even has two little strands of it hanging on the right side of her face, which is really cute. As always, some of the strands are colored lighter toward their tips, giving her hair the illusion of thinning out near the ends. Her face, like the rest of her outfit, is plain and simple. She has a young look to her with a hint of a smile. It's rather playful, and combined with the stance she has and her extended claws, she looks more like she's posing for a X-Force recruitment photo than getting ready to fight: Join X-Force and meet cute girls! Well, I'm sold. If only I had mutant powers now...
Or she looks like she's about to enjoy a fierce sparring match with a fellow teammate. I saw another picture of her where she has her mouth open, but I guess Kotobukiya decided that didn't really work with the design they wanted to go with.
Speaking of Kotobukiya, this statue is a bit of an oddity in their lineup. X-23's proportions are NOT blown out of, well, proportion. Her breasts look like those you'd find on a girl her age (do clones have ages?). Then again, she is showing some serious skin, and as I said before, those pants are riding low, especially in the back. And they're tight. Very tight. If she wasn't wearing that looped chain belt, I think things might get a little interesting on the battlefield sometimes. So I guess Kotobukiya still managed to slip in their classic 'sexy lady' charm on this statue, just in a different way. Well done.
Something must be said about the claws. I actually stabbed myself on them when I was taking the wrapping off of her. I didn't lose a finger or start bleeding, but it was enough of a prick to make me go, "Ow." They're not razor sharp, and they are not very 'solid' (meaning they can bend easy, so be careful!), but the tips of the two on her right hand can catch you off guard if you're not paying attention. And I must say, I love the one coming out of her boot. I wonder if Wolverine wishes he had one like that.
Now, here's the part where the missing star comes in. As you can see, X-23 is kneeling on her base in the picture. No big deal. Sure, she'll be shorter than your other Kotobukiya statues, but that just means she gets to be up front. Again, playing up the 'posing for a photo' look. All the other Kotobukiya statues that I've reviewed (and I've reviewed a lot. You should go read them! Okay shameless self-promoting done), had not problem getting the figure onto her base. Supergirl slid on hers just fine, Jaina and Liara had no trouble, and Power Girl, Wonder Woman, and Huntress (coming soon!) were all already on their bases when I got them. So I figured X-23 would have no problems. There are even footprints, and a knee print, in the gravel, showing you where to position her.
And then I tried to slide her right foot peg into the hole. Oh. Boy.
At first it didn't go in. At all. No problem, I thought. I looked at the slot, looked at the peg, and made sure that I wasn't putting it in wrong. Nope. The shapes matched. So I tried again. Still nothing. I considered just letting her stand--er, I mean, kneel, without the base, but this can't be done. The peg on her right boot is longer than the base of the boot, meaning she tips forward and falls. So I tried to put a little extra force into getting the peg to go in. Chipped the paint off of part of the peg. JUST the peg, thankfully, or I would have been mighty upset. I was starting to get a little annoyed, and more than a little panicky, about this. If you can't get her on her base, you may as well just leave her in the box--something I don't like doing. So I took a breath and tried one last time. Really put some effort into it, to the point where I was seriously worried that I was going to snap her. Finally, I got the peg to slide into the slot. But not all the way. Even now, X-23's boots are hovering just a centimeter or two above the ground. You can't notice it unless you really look, but it's something that shouldn't have happened.
So that is why I have to take off a star for X-23. The statue itself is great. Classic Kotobukiya workmanship. I wouldn't have even taken the star off if she could stand without the base. But she can't. The base is key to the figure's display in this case, and the fact that the slot was not made wide enough for the peg to slide into neatly (like, say, Supergirl's was) nearly ruins the statue. Thankfully I got mine to work. And who knows? Maybe I just got a defective base, and you'll have better luck.
Educational: Girls with claws can be fun and playful, but watch out for said claws. Also, that base is going to be a real learning experience for you.
Bottom line: X-23 herself is cute. She looks playful and should certainly be in the front row of your collection so your admirers know what to expect: Cute girls with power. The claws are well done, as is the detail on her hair and outfit--what little there is. It's just a pity that the fact she relies on a base, because if your base doesn't work, the entire statue is ruined.
